MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team started practice in preparation of the 2015-16 season last week.
Jesse Nelson begins his ninth season as head coach of the Mustangs and has 36 wrestlers on this season’s roster.
Leading the list of returners for SMSU is senior Cole Wilson who tallied a 37-7 record at 285 pounds last season and was a national qualifier after finishing runner-up at the 2015 NCAA Super Region 3 tournament. Wilson earned second team All-NSIC honors in 2014-15 and finished ranked seventh in the final national poll.
Senior Kyle Begin looks to make an impact after sitting out last season with a medical redshirt. Begin finished the 2013-14 season 28-9 at 165 pounds and was runner-up at the 2014 NCAA Central Super Regional. He was the 174-pound regional champion as a true freshman in 2012-13. Begin is a two-time national qualifier and a two-time All-NSIC first team honoree.
Landyn VanOverbeke finished last season 9-12 as a true freshman at 125 and fought his way through the Super Region 3 tournament. The sophomore suffered a loss in the first round but fought back through the wrestle-backs before suffering loss in the quarterfinals in a close 8-7 decision.
Southwest Minnesota State University finished last season 8-10 overall and finished sixth in the NSIC with a 3-5 mark.
